The Woodlands, TX(July 8, 2010) -- Brennan Poole's career season continued as the young Texas native turned in another incredible performance coming from last to win his second straight UARA-STARS Series race at Lonesome Pine Raceway.
A week ago, Poole became the UARA-STARS Series first repeat winner at Hickory Motor Speedway and while that win and his first win a few months ago now at Tri-County Motor Speedway were both impressive, none were quite to the tune of his Lonesome Pine triumph. Poole came into the weekend with momentum carrying over from what has been a great season for the young driver, not to mention his win the week before and he was again out to prove that he was the best driver in the UARA.
Poole established himself right away in a Friday evening practice session as he toured the track faster than anyone else and made the rest of the field scratch their heads and work overtime looking for speed and consistency. Poole's car continued to show both speed and consistency in practice on Saturday afternoon and Poole was poised for what would be another potential pole run on the 3/8 mile track located in the hills of Southwest Virginia.
Poole however made a rookie mistake when before qualifying, the young driver missed the drivers meeting for the UARA and under series rules missing the drivers meeting would cost him a lap in qualifying and force him no matter where he qualifies to start shotgun on the field. Poole and his Fat Head Racing team however never lost their cool and focused on the task at hand and realized that this 'mistake' could well play into their hands as a blessing in disguise. Poole went out to qualify at a snails pace, qualifying last of the 18-cars taking time and assuring himself that if they could have a good run, he could score maximum points for passing the most cars.
Poole's plan was simple from here, he only needed to ride out the opening laps of the race and then make his way to the front of the field. OK, so his plan wasn't that simple to execute, but after riding through the opening laps and letting the field get a little strung out, Poole began to pounce on cars one by one. To no one's surprise, Poole drove all the way up into the top five by lap 100 and had his sights set on the top four cars.
Unlike most races when you see a guy from last or near there, Poole's charge never faded as the 2009 Rookie of the Year continued his quest for the 2010 series championship by driving all the to second place by lap 125. Once in second, Poole was aided by a caution flag, but he had to be wondering if he'd used his car up making the run to second from the 18th starting position. Poole's question was answered on the restart however as after running down the leader under green and then restarting right behind him, Poole caught him and after some slight contact made his way to the lead.
A couple more cautions waved, Poole continued to get great restarts and drove away each time, until he finally took the checkered flag and secured his second win in a row and third of the 2010 season. Poole was elated to get the win in such dominating fashion coming from the rear to win the race.
"I'm so excited to win here tonight," said Poole after the race. "My guys have worked so hard, David King and Jamie Yelton and this team continue to provide me with the equipment I need each week. We had a flawless night, I mean to come from the rear and win this thing is just awesome. I just hope we can keep this momentum going for sure in the second half of the season.
Poole's quest in the UARA takes a week off this weekend, but that doesn't mean that he won't be at a track honing his skills as the young driver plans to participate in the Dwight Huffman Memorial race at Hickory Motor Speedway, where he won two weeks ago on the UARA tour.
"We're excited about the Huffman race too," continued Poole. "We know we'll have a good car and if we can have everything go right, we should be able to contend for another win. Last year we qualified in the twenty's and then charged to sixth, but hopefully this season we'll qualify better and be in the middle of the battle up front."
Once Poole puts the Dwight Huffman Memorial race in his rear view mirror, the team will have only six days to get his car back ready to challenge in the UARA-STARS Series as the tour heads back to Tri-County Motor Speedway, the site of Poole's first win this season back in the month of April. Poole expects to be a challenger at Tri-County, but knows that on the UARA, you can never take it for granted.
"The UARA has the best drivers anywhere, I feel blessed to be able to race against these guys. Racing those guys week in and week out only makes me better and I feel it has shortened my learning curve in these cars. I know that going back to Tri-County that we should be good, but I also know this deal gets harder as the season goes along and we have to continue to improve if we expect to continue to win."
